The City of Sacramento's Office of Arts and Culture provided local designers and artists the opportunity to develop and design a wayfinding sign system and placemaking intervention for the Del Rio Trail in Sacramento. As a student led project, this is a research based concept developed to be presented to the client.
Each of the 8 crossings within the trail provides the City an opportunity for public artwork and wayfinding that will help activate the corridor and reduce incidents of illegal dumping that are currently occurring within the project’s limits. The project would include sculptures on posts or other artistic designs that help guide people along the trail, and gathering spaces as a place of rest, contemplation, or exploration along the trail. The response would acknowledge the history, culture, and geography of the location, and serve the recreational needs of a diverse population of Sacramento residents and visitors.
INTRODUCTION
Mission Statement
Our mission is to invite guests to walk along an immersive timeline that takes them through the history of Sacramento in order to acknowledge and celebrate the cultures that shape the development of the Del Rio Trail and the future of the city.

RESEARCH
Background
The City of Sacramento acquired the property in 2021 in an agreement to develop the corridor as a multi‐use trail and linear park with direct connections and wayfinding to regional transit bus stops.
Goals
-
Community engagement
-
Reduce waste - Working with durable materials
-
Beautify and improve public space for walking and recreation
-
Advance equity for underserved communities
Historic marginalization of the underserved communities has created an isolated area where residents are geographically separated from the city center and access to art, culture, and recreation areas – vital to a healthy and engaged lifestyle.

WAYFINDING
Development of signage
After multiple presentations of our research and ideas, changes to the graphic palette based on feedback were made. Confident in pursuing our idea to embrace the history of the railroad and promote community wellness, the project progressed into the mockup phase to visualize how people would interact with the product.
